“Tielt between summer peaks and wet surprises”
Welcome to the May monthly overview for MeteoTielt - Weather Station Tielt.
The month of May 2025 was anything but boring in Tielt. From summer temperatures to heavy rain showers and windy days – the weather showed its capricious side. We look back at the most notable weather developments.
🌡Temperature trends
May started warm – very warm. On 2 May, Tielt immediately recorded the monthly record of 30.1°C. Also, in mid-May, a series of summer days followed with maxima around 26 to 28°C. However, it was not summer everywhere: the nights at the beginning of May were cool, with a minimum of just 5.1°C. The month ended again with warm weather. In short, May experienced notable temperature peaks and troughs – typical Belgian spring weather with summer flirts.
🌧 Precipitation
Where the weather initially remained dry and summery, with no drops of rain from 1 to 11 May, the tide turned at the end of the month. Only on 13 May did about 2 mm fall, followed by another dry period until 23 May. After that, the rain returned with force.
- 24 May:6 mm
- 25 May:4 mm
- 27 May:a spike with nearly 18 mm in one day
The month then ended fairly dry again, but the contrast between the beginning and the end was striking. A classic example of Belgian spring in two parts.
💨Wind:
Tielt also faced strong winds in the last week of May. While the first half of the month was relatively calm with northern winds, the wind shifted to the south and southwest in the second half. This was accompanied by high speeds: on 27 May, a peak of 43.6 km/h was recorded, with gusts up to 46.7 km/h. Between 24 and 29 May, speeds often exceeded 40 km/h – a windy end indeed.
Wind directions
In the first half of the month, the wind mainly came from the north and northeast. In the second half, the wind more frequently shifted to the southwest and south, coinciding with a period of increased wind activity.
Sunshine and UV index:
🌞Sunshine:
The sun was generous in May, accounting for316.3 hours of sunshinein total. Especially at the beginning of May and during the last week, it shone abundantly. However, there were a few cloudy days that stood out due to a notable lack of sunlight, such as on 18, 22, and 24 May.
🔆 UV radiation
The UV index remained at an average level for most of the month, but at the end of May, the values rose to peaks ofUV 6 to 7. Cloudy days such as 8, 18, and 24 May resulted in lower UV values, a reminder that sun strength is closely related to the degree of cloud cover.
🌫Air quality:
Early May saw the air quality leave much to be desired, with 2nd May being the negative peak: over 110 units of air pollution. Fortunately, the values improved quickly, with days at the beginning of May even dropping below 30 units – a clear breather. From 8th May, the values fluctuated again, with slight peaks on 13th and 14th May. The real improvement only came in the last week, when the air quality noticeably got better and remained so.
This pattern shows how vulnerable urban air quality remains, and how important sustained efforts in air purification are.
📌Conclusion
May 2025 brought a dynamic weather spectacle in Tielt: from summer warmth to heavy rain, strong gusts of wind, and varying air quality. A month of contrasts that reminds us how capricious spring can be in Flanders – and how important meticulous observation remains for understanding our changing climate.
