Autumnal Weather Changes in Tielt
Welcome to the monthly overview for October 2024 for MeteoTielt - Weather Station Tielt.
October 2024 brought a diverse weather picture in Tielt with temperatures fluctuating between autumnal coolness and a few pleasant warm days. Rain, sun, and wind alternated, and the month had a true autumn atmosphere. Below is a detailed overview of the meteorological highlights of this month, based on the collected data.
Temperature:
In October 2024, the average temperature in Tielt was 12.8 degrees Celsius. The month began with mild days, but as the month progressed, temperatures gradually decreased. The highest temperature was recorded on 5 October, with a pleasant 23.8 degrees, while the coldest night fell on 28 October with a minimum temperature of 5.7 degrees. This temperature trend is typical for autumn, where warm and cold air currents alternate.
Precipitation:
October was a relatively wet month with a total precipitation of 49.77 mm, spread over 20 days. Rain showers were regular, but the amount of precipitation per day varied significantly. The most rain fell on 21 October, with a maximum of 15.4 mm in one day. Between the rainy days, there were also drier periods, but most of the month was cloudy and humid.
Wind:
The average wind speed was 4.1 km/h, indicating a calm month. However, there were days with strong gusts of wind. The maximum wind speed was recorded on 15 October, peaking at 41.7 km/h, and gusts reached speeds of up to 41.8 km/h on the same day. These days created typical autumn conditions, with leaves blowing from the trees and a fresh breeze through the streets.
Sunshine and UV index:
Sunshine:
Despite the many rainy days, the sun shone for a total of 129.5 hours in October. This is quite average for this time of year. Especially in the middle of the month, we had a few days with more sunshine, which provided lovely autumn days. The maximum solar power, measured on 3 October, even reached 777 W/m². This solar strength created a pleasant atmosphere and helped to raise the temperature throughout the day.
UV index:
The UV index remained low throughout the month, with an average of 0.2 and a peak of only 2.7. This low UV level is typical for autumn and means there was little risk of sunburn. The solar strength has significantly decreased compared to the summer months.
Air quality:
During October 2024, the air quality in Tielt remained variable, influenced by factors such as temperature, wind, and nearby traffic and industry. Air pollution mainly consisted of PM10 and PM2.5 particles, originating from both natural and human activities such as traffic and industrial emissions. These particles can cause respiratory problems, especially in vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions. High concentrations of PM10 are often visible as mist or smog and can increase the likelihood of asthma attacks and lung problems.
Especially on days with little wind and colder temperatures, there was an increased concentration of fine particulate matter in the city, which is partly due to reduced air circulation that exacerbated the accumulation of pollutants. Additionally, monitoring systems such as those from MeteoTielt and meteoblue reported elevated levels of ozone and nitrogen oxides, particularly near roads. This low-level ozone is primarily caused by traffic emissions and industrial activities and can make breathing difficult and worsen pneumonia.
Conclusion:
October 2024 was a typical autumn month in Tielt, characterised by alternating weather conditions. The average temperature of 12.8°C provided a mix of pleasantly warm days and cool nights, while rain spread over two-thirds of the month with some heavy showers. Despite the rainy weather, there were plenty of moments of sunshine, with a total of 129.5 hours of sunshine, resulting in a number of lovely autumn days. The wind was generally calm, although there were occasional strong gusts that made the autumn leaves dance through the streets.
This month highlighted the versatility of the autumn season, where mild temperatures and heavy showers alternate. With November approaching, we look forward to what the transition to winter will bring, possibly colder temperatures and shorter days. October has already given us a beautiful palette of autumn weather.
