Changeable Autumn Month with Sunny Moments

September 2024 brought a varied weather picture to Tielt. The month experienced a mix of sunny days, cool nights, and several rainy periods. Although the temperatures were generally mild, there were some extremes both high and low. The MeteoTielt weather station has collected the key data and processed it in this monthly overview.
Temperature:
On average, the temperature in September was 16 degrees, which is fairly normal for this time of year. However, the extremes were notable: the highest temperature recorded was a summery 32.7 degrees, while the lowest temperature dropped to 5.6 degrees, giving a preview of the approaching autumn.
Precipitation:
In total, 85.32 mm of precipitation fell, spread over 17 days. This makes September a fairly wet month, although there was still plenty of room for sunny periods.
Wind:
As for the wind, it remained generally calm with an average wind speed of 4.9 km/h. The highest recorded wind speed was 46.8 km/h, with gusts up to 48.3 km/h. This occasionally caused some turbulence, but overall the wind damage was minimal.
Sunshine and UV index:
Sunshine:
In September, the sunshine had an average solar radiation of 216.8 W/m², with a maximum value of 819.0 W/m². The sun shone for a total of 211.0 hours during the month. The variations in sunshine were quite significant, with peaks in solar radiation on the 2nd, 7th, 14th, and 27th of the month, while there was significantly less sunshine on the 5th and 6th.
UV index:
Regarding the UV index, the monthly average was relatively low with a 24-hour average of 0.5, a daytime average of 1.7, and a maximum UV index of 4.4. This indicates predominantly mild solar radiation, with only occasional moderate UV values, mainly at the beginning of the month.
Air quality:
In September, the air quality in Tielt showed strong fluctuations. At the beginning of the month, the values ranged between 60 and 100, with a peak of over 120 on 5 September, indicating poor air quality. After a temporary improvement in the middle of the month, with a few days of lower values below 50, the air quality deteriorated again from 20 September, with values exceeding 140 on some days. By the end of the month, the air quality improved again, but continued to fluctuate with a few days below 50, which is reasonably clean, and a few days above.
Conclusion:
September 2024 was a month of contrasts in Tielt, with both summer temperatures and cool autumn nights. The rainfall was fairly spread out over more than half of the month, but thanks to the 211 hours of sunshine, we also had many pleasant days. Although there were moments of wind activity, it remained largely calm and mild. Overall, this September offered a varied weather picture, typical of the transition from summer to autumn, and a harbinger of what the coming months might bring.
