Autumnal weather changes in Tielt

Welcome to the monthly overview of September 2024 for MeteoTielt - Weather Station Tielt.

October 2024 brought a diverse weather picture in Tielt with temperatures that fluctuated between autumnal coolness and some pleasant warm days. Rain, sun and wind alternated, and the month had a real autumn atmosphere. Below is a detailed overview of this month's meteorological highlights, based on the data collected.

Temperature:

In October 2024, Tielt experienced an average temperature of 12.8°C. The month started off relatively mild but gradually cooled down. The highest temperature, recorded on October 5, reached 23.8°C, while the lowest temperature was 5.7°C on October 28. This variation reflects the transitional nature of autumn, with warmer days at the beginning of the month giving way to chillier nights as October progressed.

Rainfall:

October was a rather wet month, with a total rainfall of 49.77 mm spread across 20 days. Rain showers were frequent, though the daily rainfall amounts varied. The wettest day was October 21, with 15.4 mm recorded in a single day. Although rainy periods were common, there were also some dry spells, but overcast skies and damp conditions were prevalent.

Wind:

The average wind speed in October was 4.1 km/h, indicating calm conditions. However, there were occasional windy days. The highest wind speed was recorded on October 15, peaking at 41.7 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 41.8 km/h on the same day. These gusty days created a classic autumn atmosphere with leaves blowing around and a crisp wind in the air.

Sunshine and UV Index:

Sunshine:

Despite the frequent rainfall, the sun shone for a total of 129.5 hours in October. This is relatively average for this time of year. The middle of the month saw a few sunnier days, providing a pleasant autumn atmosphere. The highest solar irradiance was recorded on October 3, reaching up to 777 W/m². This solar power contributed to warmer temperatures during the daytime.

UV-index:

The UV index remained low throughout October, averaging 0.2, with a maximum reading of just 2.7. This low UV level is typical for autumn and indicates minimal risk of sunburn. The sun's intensity has significantly decreased compared to the summer months.

Air Quality:

During October 2024, air quality in Tielt fluctuated, influenced by factors like temperature, wind, and nearby traffic and industry. Air pollution mainly consisted of PM10 and PM2.5 particles from natural and human sources such as traffic and industrial emissions. These particles can cause respiratory issues, especially in vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. High PM10 concentrations, often visible as haze or smog, can increase the likelihood of asthma attacks and lung problems.

On days with little wind and cooler temperatures, there was a higher concentration of particulate matter in the city due to reduced air circulation, which can cause pollutants to accumulate. Monitoring systems, such as those from MeteoTielt and meteoblue, reported elevated ozone and nitrogen oxide levels, particularly near roads. This low-altitude ozone, primarily produced by traffic emissions and industrial activities, can make breathing difficult and exacerbate lung infections.

Conclusion:

October 2024 was a typical autumn month in Tielt, marked by changing weather conditions. The average temperature of 12.8°C offered a mix of pleasantly warm days and cool nights, while rain spread across two-thirds of the month with a few heavy showers. Despite the rainy weather, there were enough sunny moments, with a total of 129.5 hours of sunshine, creating some beautiful autumn days. Winds were generally calm, though there were occasional gusts that sent the autumn leaves swirling through the streets.

This month highlighted the versatility of the autumn season, with mild temperatures and heavy showers alternating throughout. With November approaching, we look forward to seeing what the transition to winter will bring, possibly with colder temperatures and shorter days. October has already given us a rich palette of autumn weather.
