“Warm, changeable and full of contrasts”
Welcome to the monthly overview of MeteoTielt - Weather StationTielt.
July 2025 brought a typical Belgian summer weather picture in Tielt with summer heat, some extreme outliers and a striking mix of sun, wind and rain. From heat waves to cool nights, and from dry days to sudden heavy showers - this month had it all.
🌡Temperature Trends
July immediately began with a bang: 37.9°C was recorded on July 1 - the highest temperature of the month and the start of a short heat wave.
Average temperatures clocked in at 19.4°C, slightly above the normal July average.
Temperatures dropped after that first week, but remained summery with maxima between 23°C and 30°C. Notable was the warm period between July 17 and 19, after which the weather became more stable. Nighttime minima dropped to 11.5°C, which made for pleasant nights.
🌧 Precipitation
Despite a mostly dry month, a total of 75.18 mm of rain fell over 12 days.
Precipitation was especially concentrated on July 6 and July 21, with more than 25 mm in a short time each time. The rest of the month remained light, scattered showers. Despite the peaks, total precipitation remained about at the seasonal average.
💨Wind:
Winds in July were erratic, peaking at up to 38.6 mph.
The highest wind speeds were recorded on July 6, 14 and 20. In between, it was calmer, but the month maintained a dynamic character with regularly changing wind speeds - typical of a summer with changing systems.
Sunshine and UV Index:
🌞Sunshine:
In total, the sun shone 198.7 hours over Tielt in July. This is slightly below the monthly average for Flanders, which is usually between 210 and 220 hours. Nevertheless, there were many days with high sunshine hours, mainly between July 1 and 5 and again around July 16 to 18.
Notable were some days with much lower sunshine duration, such as on July 6, July 20 and July 28, where solar irradiance dropped markedly. This dip is also visually confirmed in the graph, which shows the sunshine strength (possibly in kWh/m² or similar unit) per day. The orange colored bars clearly mark the days with significantly lower radiation.
🔆UV radiation
The UV index - a measure of the intensity of the sun's ultraviolet radiation - remained generally high, typical for the month of July. Most days were between 5.5 and 7, meaning that sun protection such as sunscreen and hats were absolutely necessary.
Still, there are some interesting outliers down here as well, most notably on July 6, July 20 and to a lesser extent on July 28. Those same days also coincided with lower sunshine hours, indicating cloudiness or precipitation at those times. The graph nicely shows how these days stand out for their lower UV values (orange instead of red), while the rest of the month maintains high values.
🌫Air Quality:
Air quality varied greatly in July. Especially on July 1, 2, 11, 13 and 14, it was moderate to poor (orange values).
Opposite periods, such as July 4-9 and after July 20, actually had better air quality (green zones), presumably helped by wind and precipitation.
The pattern showed a clear rhythm of alternating good and bad air, which fits the variable weather pattern of this month.
📌Conclusion
Juli 2025 in Tielt was a month of contrasts: hot to start, then summery and varied. Temperatures were slightly above normal, the sun shone regularly but not abundantly, and precipitation fell mostly in heavy peaks.
So a typical Belgian summer month - with a bit of everything, and certainly not a dull affair for weather lovers.
