May 2025 overview

“Tielt between summer peaks and wet surprises”

Welcome to the monthly overview of may for MeteoTielt - Weather StationTielt.

The month of May 2025 in Tielt was anything but dull. From summer temperatures to heavy rain showers and windy days - the weather showed its capricious side. We look back at the most striking weather developments.

🌡Temperature Trends

May started hot - very hot. On May 2, the monthly record of 30.1°C was set in Tielt. A series of summery days followed in mid-May, with maxima around 26 to 28°C. Nevertheless, it was not summer everywhere: the nights at the beginning of May were cool, with a minimum of only 5.1°C. The month again ended with warm weather. In short, May had remarkable temperature peaks and valleys - typical Belgian spring weather with summer flirtations. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

🌧 Precipitation

Whereas the weather initially remained summer dry, with not a drop of rain from May 1 to 11, the tide turned at the end of the month. As late as May 13, about 2 mm fell, followed by another dry spell until May 23. Then the rain came back with force.

  • May 24: 6 mm
  • May 25: 4 mm
  • May 27: outlier with nearly 18 mm in one day

The month then ended quite dry again, but the contrast between beginning and end was striking. A classic sample of Belgian spring in two parts.

💨Wind:

In terms of wind, Tielt also received the full brunt of the last week of May. Whereas the first half of the month was relatively calm with northerly winds, in the second half the wind turned to the south and southwest. This was accompanied by high speeds: a peak of 43.6 mph was measured on May 27, with gusts up to 46.7 mph. Between May 24 and 29, speeds were often above 40 km/h - a windy end, in other words.

Wind Directions

Winds came mainly from the north and northeast during the first half of the month. In the second half, winds turned southwest and south more frequently, coinciding with the period of increased wind activity.

Sunshine and UV Index:

🌞Sunshine:

The sun showed generously in May, accounting for 316.3 sunshine hours in total. Especially in early May and during the last week it shone abundantly. However, there were some cloudy days that stood out for a conspicuous lack of sunlight, such as May 18, 22 and 24.

🔆UV radiation

The UV index remained at average levels for most of the month, but values rose to peaks of UV 6 to 7 in late May. Cloudy days such as May 8, 18 and 24 produced lower UV values, a reminder that sun power is strongly related to cloudiness.

🌫Air Quality:

In early May, air quality left much to be desired, with May 2 being the negative topper: more than 110 units of air pollution. Fortunately, values improved quickly, with early May even days below 30 units - a clear respite. From May 8 the values fluctuated again, with slight peaks on May 13 and 14. The real improvement came only in the last week, where air quality noticeably improved and remained better.

This pattern shows how vulnerable urban air quality remains, and the importance of continued commitment to air purification.

📌Conclusion

May 2025 brought a dynamic weather spectacle in Tielt: from summer heat to heavy rain, strong wind gusts and varying air quality. A month of contrasts that reminds us how capricious spring in Flanders can be - and how important close observation remains for understanding our changing climate.
